MMA Combine: The Future of the Sport?

I’m going to scoop this story over ALar.  It’s been a while since I’ve written about MMA, so here goes nothing! – Bill

__________

There’s been a lot of press about the first ever UFC Combine to be held at the Mandalay before UFC 162.  Apparently Uriah Faber and Phil Davis will be hosting the event meant to assess and showcase top MMA amateur prospects registered with their site, MMADraft.com

You can read which events will be used here.  It seems like equal weight will be placed upon the physical exercises–shuttle run, 40-yard dash, medicine ball throw–and skills in grappling, striking, and wrestling.

Is this how we’ll find the next Anderson Silva?

My question: if the combine catches on, will it mean the end of the amateur MMA scene?  Will you need to fight in college and then get drafted into the UFC?  Will scrappers like the Diaz brothers be excluded because they’re not powerful, explosive athletes?  Will non-athlete martial art specialists like Royce Gracie be totally and completely obsolete?

MMA fans, what do you think about the UFC Combine?

Not sold on this combine deal. You are only going to see a fighter’s true colors with live in ring action. I don’t believe amateur MMA’s future is in jeopardy at all. Would Mark Hunt flourish at an MMA combine? I doubt it, but he is one fight away from a shot at the biggest title in the sport.
