ALar previews UFC 164: Henderson v. Pettis II

Forget about that TJ Grana fella??

Forget about that TJ Grana fella??

With all this UFC action, my blogging fingers are growing weary, but I will fight through the pain and deliver for you, my loyal readers! This Saturday the UFC is throwing one of the best cards in recent memory at us. If you checked out the sick night of FREE fights last night during the Condit/Kampmann card, you should almost feel compelled to shell out the cash to watch this one. We all know the story of the ‘Showtime Kick‘ and have seen it 1,000,000 times in the pre-fight hype videos for this card, but that fight was much closer than the highlights would lead you to believe. Many across the MMA blogosphere scored it for Bendo.  Though, Henderson hasn’t exactly been challenged during his recent title reign.  As an armchair handicapper, I believe that Anthony Pettis will be the first to give Benson and his belt a scare.

Saturday night also marks the return of the reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion to the promotion. What?!?! Yes, Josh Barnett technically never lost the UFC Heavyweight strap that he beat Randy Couture for at UFC 32 in March, 2002. He was stripped of the belt for a testing hot after the bout, but even so, he has never technically lost his UFC gold. The entire card from Facebook prelims to Main Card is worthwhile entertainment and this Saturday could prove to be one of the best night of fights in 2013. On to the preview!

The Joy of Sumo

One of my new karate students recently shared his love of sumo wrestling with me. I’ve always admired the wrestlers and their special mix of enormous size and explosive athleticism. Here are some excellent examples of bouts and techniques that show just how amazing sumo can be!

Kimarite Winning Techniques Highlights

Many of these throws are straight out of judo. But to see such large men executing them? Wow! And how about the first winner who slid into an effortless split!

A Normal Life: Chronicle of a Sumo Wrestler

This is a really neat documentary that sheds insight into the everyday life of a novice sumo wrestler. He eventually leaves the stable because it is too regimented and demanding; training–and eating!–is no joke. The tournaments are extremely challenging as well. If you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be a sumo wrestler, definitely check out this video.

Bob Sapp vs. Butterbean Sumo Match!

Well, this last one ain’t traditional sumo, but I couldn’t resist including two of my old favorites!

UFC On Fox Sports 1: Insider Highlights

Hey, fight fans. I’m fresh back from the UFC debut on Fox Sports 1 in Boston. Let me start with aplogies once again. Remember back in 2010 when I promised live tweets from the cheap seats? Turns out I couldn’t get cell service in The Gardern and it didn’t work out.

Well, I kept mum this year, but I hoped to surprise you with some live coverage. Turns out my battery died and it didn’t work out!

Sorry about that!

But while I failed to deliver last night, I’d like to share some insider highlights about the experience. Unless you live in Vegas, chances are you haven’t had too many opportunities to attend a live show. Here are some of the best parts of the night that was the UFC’s second visit to Beantown.

Ready for Launch: A Preview of the UFC debut on FOX Sports 1

New Channel. Same Octagon.

shogunvsSonnen

Well, well, well… We are a house divided here at Moai Martial Arts. One of us will be in attendance at this Saturday’s so-called UFC Fight Night 26: Sonnen v. Shogun, while the other one of us will be here surrounded by 12 of his best friends from High School and copious amounts of adult beverages. Both of us have pretty solid weekends planned, but only the boss man will get to see the likes of Joe Lauzon, Urijah Faber, Alistair Overeem, and Shogun Rua get paid to fight in a cage with his own two eyes. Make sure to check our Facebook and Twitter pages for some inside scoops from Boston from the head honcho!

fox-sports-1_730_20130305144320758_660_320_jpg.0_standard_352.0Aside from updating you on our various whereabouts for this landmark UFC card, I figured I will treat you to the typical preview of this superb lineup of fights. Zuffa pulled out all the stops to launch FOX’s new 24/7 sports network with one of, if not the best, free MMA card of all time. I mean when guys like Mike Brown, internet legend Conor McGregor, and Michael Macdonald all find themselves on the prelims, you know the UFC has stepped up their booking game after the last few events lacked big name draws. Looking at the Main Card, it is built for non-stop excitement for the new FOX Sports 1 crowd (If you can’t find the new network on your TV Guide, FOX SPORTS 1 is going to take the place of the SPEED Channel that you never watched.) There are no notable ‘point fighters’, ‘wall and stall’ culprits, or ‘lay and pray’ offenders on this card and that is just fine with me. This network launch allows the sport to be seen by millions of new eyes and I am all for putting on entertaining and exciting fights for the masses. Check out my preview below!

UFC 163: Dragons and Zombies in Brazil!

So we are letting Zombies fight in cages now? Cool with me.

ufc-163-fod-ppv_2500_640x360_39007299823

So this Saturday, the UFC begins a barrage of Pay Per View title fights that will take us to the end of 2013. In the Main Event of the night, Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo will defend his belt against challenger ‘The Korean Zombie’ (or Chan Sung Jung if you want to be proper.) Contrary to some Internet warriors, I don’t care that the UFC has been billing the Korean superstar as a ‘The Korean Zombie’ in their promotional materials leading up to UFC 163. What would you do if Zuffa’s bottom line was your primary interest? Using the name TKZ instead of CSJ is surely the best PR move since few fans outside of the ‘core’ audience have heard of Chan Sung Jung and more will likely tune in because a dude is being called ‘The Korean Zombie’ by an energetic Joe Rogan in the event’s countdown shows.

On a more positive note, these two Featherweights seem adverse to boring fights. Both have a strong penchant to put on Fight of the Night-esque performances any time they enter the cage.  This Main Event should be a scrap that makes us forget about whatever Rory Macdonald and Jake Ellenberger did last weekend on FOX. On the the preview!

Undercard on FX at 8 PM (Picks in Bold)

vinny

This card had a slew of injury fallouts, and just like last week, I am shocked that a few fights here are not being bumped up to improve the quality of the Brazilian flavored Pay Per View, but again, I am just a guy sitting here writing this in his parent’s basement…

Ian McCall v. Iliarde Santos

Sergio Moraes v. Neil Magny

Amanda Nunes v. Sheila Gaff

Vinny Magalhaes v. Anthony Perosh

Main Card on Pay Per View at 10 PM EST

Damn you and your meniscus, Showtime...

Damn you and your meniscus, Showtime…

John Lineker v. Jose Tome

Admittedly, I know jack squat about Tome besides what I can learn from looking him up on Sherdog. He is undefeated since a March 2008 loss to Jussier Formiga, which is pretty damn impressive. The thing is, I have watched Lineker’s last two fights and think he is one of the most talented fighters in the 125 lb division. Lineker is a 4-1 favorite in this one and I wholeheartedly agree. I’ll go out on a limb here and call for the TKO victory for Lineker.

JohnLineker_Headshot151

Thales Leites v. Tom ‘Kong’ Watson

This is a dark horse pick for Fight of the Night right here. We haven’t seen Leites in the UFC since his loss to Alessio Sakara back at UFC 101, but he has cleaned out the Jeremy Horn’s and Jesse Taylor’s of the world in an impressive enough fashion to earn a spot in the big show in his home country of Brazil. I don’t know if we will see any butt scooting in this one, though I believe Leites’ ground game will be the difference when the final bell rings. Leites might get a submission late, but the likely outcome is is the one time Number One contender earning a decision victory.

This pic makes that fight look mildly interesting.

Cezar Ferreira v. Thiago Santos

Apparently, Ferreira is a winner of TUF: Brazil, but you could have told me he was the National Brazilian Waxing Champion and I wouldn’t have been able to refute your claim. Vegas has Ferreira as a huge favorite here and I will have to side with the wise guys because, again, I have no idea who Thiago Santos is. Let’s make it interesting, Cezar by 2nd round submission.

I think this is Ferreira...

I think this is Ferreira…

Lyoto Machida v. Phil Davis

Now we know someone over here at Moai Martial Arts is in a total bromance with Machida, so whenever he enters the cage it is a special moment for half of the staff.  Do I think Lyoto Machida beat Dan Henderson back at UFC 157? Nope, not a chance, but I do believe he will defeat Phil Davis on Saturday night in a similar fashion. Davis is one the best pure wrestlers in the sport of MMA, but his striking just hasn’t evolved to match the rest of his game. His tilt with Vinny Magalhaes turned in to a C-Level kickboxing match where Davis earned a lackluster decision win. I can see Machida working his magic against Davis, just as he did Henderson. The Dragon will circle and pick his spots to land precision strikes on Davis, and when Davis gets aggressive, Machida will evade and attempt to make Davis’ advances look futile in the eyes of the judges. I’ll be my bottom dollar that Lyoto Machida earns a decision victory on Saturday night. Does that bring him any closer to a title shot? I doubt it, but who knows, anything can happen in this crazy sport of MMA.

Main Event

Featherweight Championship Bout

Champion Jose Aldo v. The Korean Zombie a.k.a. Chan Sung Jung

Odd marketing aside, this tilt is sure to be the most talked about matchup of this card.  We know the Jose Aldo story by now, he has DEVASTATING leg kicks and an arsenal of attacks that would make Ryu feel inadequate. Aldo also sports a black belt in BJJ, but we really haven’t seen him in a situation where he has needed to utilize his ground skills. If I were to throw together a Pound for Pound list right at this very moment, I would likely put Aldo at the very top. He is one of the few guys in the sport that I would pay serious money to watch in person.

His challenger on Saturday will be the mythical Korean Zombie. If you haven’t watched TKZ’s fights against Leonard Garcia or Dustin Poirer, do yourself a favor and head over to the Google and check them out. TKZ personifies pure action from the moment the bout starts to the second the final bell tolls. As this week’s promotions have told us, he can withstand an ‘inhuman’ amount of punishment and will just keep marching forward pushing the action. This is certainly admirable, but it likely isn’t a great strategy to use against one of the premier strikers in the sport. TKZ is as talented as they come, showcasing elite BJJ, Judo, and Tae Kwon Do in his fights, but he is coming off a fourteen month layoff due to injury. I’m not the Zombie’s agent, but I don’t think coming off a year long layoff and fighting one of the best mixed martial artists in the world is a smart move in the long run.

If I had to predict how the fight would go down, I would imagine the first round or two will be something epic along the lines of Stann/Silva, but then Aldo will begin to break down TKZ and battering the Korean’s limited defenses with an array of precision jabs and leg kicks. Aldo retains the belt with a late third or early fourth round TKO victory.

Can Aldo top his last highlight from Rio! We'll have to tune in to see.

UFC on FOX: Johnson v. Moraga Preview

The Calm Before the Storm

UFC-on-FOX-8-banner
Haven’t heard about this Saturday’s FREE UFC on FOX card yet? I don’t blame you. The UFC hasn’t exactly been throwing down the big bucks on promotion for this weekend’s event. With massive Pay Per Views and the FOX Sports 1 launch just a few weeks away, I think the UFC, and many fans, are treating this card as an appetizer for the avalanche of MMA that is headed our way in the coming months.

This card is another unfortunate victim of the injury/replacement bug that plagues our favorite sport. Robbie Lawler was initially slated to face off against former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Tarec Saffiedine, but Saffiedine was forced off the card and replaced by heavy handed Siyar Bahadurzada. Sadly, ‘Siyar the Great’ had to pull out of the fight with Lawler and was replaced with Bobby Voelker. Voelker certainly is not the biggest draw for the national TV spotlight. Miesha Tate was also supposed to kick the card off against recent #1 contender Liz Carmouche, but Tate was bumped into a TUF slot against Ronda Rousey due to Cat Zingano’s injury, thus the underdog Jessica Andrade was picked to fill in against Carmouche. With these injuries and replacements, I am thoroughly surprised that some fights from the above average undercard were not moved to the big show on FOX to attempt to draw more ‘casual’ fans, but hey, I’m not the one calling the shots at Zuffa, …yet.

Even without huge drawing power, this could be one of those cards that provides excitement from top to bottom, even though we sat down to watch with very low expectations. Saturday should still be a fun night of FREE fights, check out my preview after the jump!

Coconut Water: The Hype is Real

The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Drink

A green coconutFor over a year now I have been full–steam ahead on the coconut water hype train. If I don’t have a stash of the stuff in my fridge, I feel like a drug addict that doesn’t know where his next fix is coming from. If you have been living under a rock and are wondering what the heck coconut water is, let me break it down for you. Coconut water is harvested from young, green coconuts that have not grown large enough to develop the ‘milk’ that pours out of the hairy, brown coconuts you may be familiar with. The advantages of this product are that it is a natural substance packed with high levels of potassium, I describe it to friends as, “Gatorade without all the crap in it.” (Sugars, dyes, higher carbs and calories, etc.)

I have been preaching the power of coconut water to my friends for over a year now and find that the product has become necessary to my existence on two accounts.  First, as a post-workout rehydration tool, nothing beats a cold coconut water and a jump in the pool. Second, coconut water is the only real ‘hangover’ cure that I have discovered in my extensive Hangover Reducing Research. Trust me, I’ve had a hangover or two in my day and downing a coconut water before bed and forcing one down in the morning/early afternoon is the only sure-fire way to make your head stop pounding and stomach stop turning.

The point of this blog is to guide you to the best coconut water for your needs. Store shelves have been inundated with fly by night coconut water brands as of late, and I’ll direct you to what I think are the best brands on the market.

Best Post-Workout Treatments

We recently discussed recovery on our sister site, Jackeddad.com, but here’s a complementary piece written by Virginia Cunningham, a fitness writer and yoga practicioner, that offers another perspective.  Enjoy! – Bill

__________

Best Post-Workout Treatments

When you do over ninety minutes of intense exercise in the gym, it’s an absolutely punishing experience for your body. What you’re essentially doing is tearing yourself down, so that your body will build itself back up, making it stronger than before.

It’s a healthy, effective and necessary aspect of our training and fitness, but it’s only one part of the process.

The second, and equally necessary aspect, is our recovery time. Continue reading
