Five Martial Arts Tips for New Parents

20121021-084616.jpg

Shhhh . . .

Baby’s sleeping, and I have maybe five minutes to write this before he’s hungry again. Parenthood is super fun, but it’s pretty time consuming! If you’re a new parent like me, you’re probably missing out on your usual training schedule. Yeah, it’s worth it. But here are some tips to keep you sharp while you take some time off to get good at parenting!

1. Get your diet in order. You probably won’t be training–or sleeping–consistently for a while. Neither of these things are conducive to maintaining your fighting weight. Paleo Diet, Thrive Diet, Zone Diet, Warrior Diet, Weight Watchers–it doesn’t matter as long as you eat as clean as possible.

2. Practice your katas. That way, you can keep up your skills and focus while training alone. (You probably won’t make it to the dojo for a while, either.) If your style doesn’t feature katas or forms, do drill work, shadowbox, or just wail the heavy bag when you get a little time to spare.

3. Short, intense conditioning workouts are your friend. Hour-long sparring sessions probably won’t happen for awhile. Stay in shape so you won’t be sucking too much wind when you lace up the gloves or hit the mats again.

4. YouTube is your new sensei. Chances are you’ll be dying for a martial arts fix. Watch anything you like: instructional videos, UFC highlights, grappling matches, hell, even action movie clips are worthwhile. (My son already loves Kung Fu Panda.)

5. Remember that studying the martial arts is a lifestyle, not a job. Don’t put any pressure on yourself. Your gym or dojo will still be there when you are ready to return. Enjoy your new role as parent, and try to set a good example for your child. Train hard when you can, but have fun and keep things in perspective.

Well, it’s about time I get that bottle ready. If you have any tips, please share them here!

Reserve some time for No Reservations

In my humble opinion, Anthony Bourdain’s travel show ‘No Reservations’ is one of the best ways to spend an hour watching television. If you are (shamefully!) in the the dark on ‘No Reservations’, the show features Bourdain taking a no holds barred approach to cuisine and the experience that surrounds it. Tony’s self deprecating humor and affable personality will have you glued to the tube as he explores places and cultures that you can only dream of some day encountering.

It is impossible for this place to suck, right???

Last night’s episode was one of my favorites in recent memory; as Bourdain traveled to Rio de Janiero, Brazil. From start to finish, I was in absolute awe of how freaking awesome Anthony’s job is. This could have a something to do with the idea that traveling to Rio is very high on my constantly growing ‘Bucket List’. Add in the fact that the show revolved around a topic we are very fond of here at Moai Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I was hooked!

For a typical episode, Bourdain will travel to a location and attempt to create an hour of television that embodies the cuisine and lifestyle of that culture or region. Other episodes see Anthony taking on a humanitarian role, as he looks to expand the awareness of earthquake recovery on Haiti or landmine disposal in Laos.

Ottavia giving Igor the ol’ RNC

In last night’s case, Anthony was in Rio to take in a jiu-jitsu match, and not just any match, but one featuring his wife. I remember hearing Anthony talk about his wife’s interest in grappling ages ago on the Joe Rogan Experience, but I didn’t know how serious she took it. Ottavia Bourdain is blue belt under Renzo Gracie at his academy in NYC. For last night’s episode Renzo’s cousin, Igor Gracie, took on the role of instructor to Ottavia.

Along with the usual close ups of juicy grilled meats, icy beverages, and otherworldly sunsets; the ‘No Reservations’ crew did an amazing job at exhibiting Ottavia’s commitment to the martial arts. From Anthony taking jabs at her low-carb, protein rich diet and rigorous workout schedule, to the emotion showed by instructor Igor or Ottavia’s Brazilian competitor (I won’t spoil the outcome for you!). You couldn’t help but feel as though you were just as wrapped up in the competition as a member of the family, even if it was for just one hour.

The show ends, as many do, with Anthony and Ottavia enjoying a home cooked meal of customary Brazilian dishes prepared by Igor’s mother. For those of us out there that follow the world of martial arts and combat sports and always wondered what it would be like to sit down at a Gracie family dinner, ‘No Reservations’ gives you that chance.

I highly advise checking out your local listings and catching the next airing of the episode. You will not be dissappointed.

ALar’s UFC 153 Preview: Nothing wrong with fun fights!

{Author’s Note: If you haven’t been informed, the head honcho is taking paternity leave from the blog for time being. Congratulations to him, but he mistakenly left me the keys to the website! Get ready for a wild ride!!!}

UFC 153 is another product of the injury plague that has struck the organization over the last 12 months.  I won’t take up any of your time complaining about overtraining or fighter insurance, but I will certainly attempt to get you pumped up for tomorrow night’s fights. Sure, there are no belts on the line and some of the matchups may not have a strong implication towards the hierarchy of their respective division, but as Dana White said, “There is nothing wrong with having a fun fight.” As a fan of MMA, I would be wrong to say I was not hyped up to watch stars like Anderson Silva and Big Nog fight in their native Brazil. The atmosphere that Brazilian fans create during a UFC event is second to none; add in two of the nation’s biggest stars? HSBC Arena is surely going to be rocking come tomorrow night. On to the preview!

PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook, 7 p.m. ET)

  • Chris Camozzi (via TKO) vs. Luiz Cane
  • Reza Madadi (via KO) vs. Cristiano Marcello

PRELIMINARY CARD (FX, 8 p.m. ET)

  • Rony “Jason” Mariano Bezerra (via submission) vs. Sam Sicilia
  • Gleison Tibau (via Decision) vs. Francisco Trinaldo
  • Diego Brandao (via Decision) vs. Joey Gambino
  • Renee Forte vs. Sergio Moraes (via Decision)

Since we are getting a six fight Main Card tomorrow, I figured I would just throw my picks for the prelims above. If you have any questions about the early bouts feel free to ask me in the comment section or Twitter!

Main Card (PPV, 10 PM ET)

Demian Maia v. Rick Story

The night starts with a welterweight bout between two guys coming into the Octagon after winning their last fight. Personally, I am huge a fan of the 170-lb Demian Maia. I feel at a lighter weight he won’t be overpowered and can use his skill and finesse to look to finish opponents on the ground. Rick Story isn’t the most exciting fighter in the sport, but always seems game for a battle to the final bell. I think the two will look to stand and trade for a better part of the first round, but a scramble will ensue as the clock ticks down as one of the athletes looks to steal a round with a takedown. I can see Maia wearing Story down and getting into a dominant position during a scramble towards the end of the fight. Maia by Round 3 Submission.

Facebook Cover Photo? You know it.

Phil Davis v. Wagner Prado

It was good to see that during the weigh ins these guys could make fun of their ‘No Contest’ ruling back at UFC on FOX 4. Davis poked Prado’s eye and rendered the Brazilian unable to continue. Up to that point, I had Davis up on the scorecards. To my surprise, Prado looked like he had chugged a 2-liter of Mountain Dew right before the weigh ins. The guy was AMPED UP.  The usually monotone Prado was damn near inciting a riot in the Brazilian crowd. I expect him to bring it to Davis right away, but I’m not confident of his cardio. I think Phil will be able to control Prado as the fight drags on.  Don’t look for this one to be getting any Fight of the Night Honors. Davis by Decision.

Only real men wear pink…

Jon Fitch v. Erick Silva

As cool of a guy as Jon Fitch is, the more he says lately, the more I begin to dislike him.  His comments about the UFC being a popularity contest and lack of sponsorship opportunities are very irksome. It is clear that the UFC brass celebrates guys that go into the cage looking for a “war” and put on a show. Jon can look at his own record as to why matchmakers may not appreciate him and why sponsors may be shying away. Just freakin’ look at it! The guy hasn’t finished a fight in five years! So then how does the UFC reward Jon ‘The Walking Decision’ Fitch? Throw one of the most talented and hyped fighters in the organization in Erick Silva at him.  Fitch could grind out a win versus Silva here if pulls the ‘lay and pray’ for three rounds, but Brazilian fans would sooner rush the cage and shiv Fitch before he could hear the final bell if that were the case. Silva handled a solid wrestler in Charlie Brenneman in his last bout and I believe he has the chops to deal with Fitch’s takedown attempts. I think this fight is another case of a scramble leading to a submission. Silva by Submission

Glover Teixiera v. Fabio Maldonado

Ahh, this is the slot that was once inhabited by my guy Rampage… sigh… Now, if you thought Erick Silva had a hype train behind him, Glover Teixiera must have the Hype Millenium Falcon spurring his reputation on. Former champs and top prospects want absolutely nothing to do with the guy. He has tons of power in his hands and his ground game is lethal. I don’t blame a soul for not wanting to tangle with Mr. T. It is tough to say anything bad about Glover, besides the fact that his recent opponents havent exactly been high caliber. Rampage certainly would have been a test, but I still don’t see a fight with Fabio Maldonado teaching us much about Teixiera. Maldonado strikes me as a guy that owns a whole lot of fedoras, whatever that means. He is going to get manhandled by Glover tomorrow night. Maldonado has never been knocked out, I think Glover is the guy to change that. Teixera by TKO.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira v. Dave Herman

The last time we saw Big Nog in the cage, his arm was laying limp after Frank Mir snapped it in half. As the arm popped, any long time fan of the sport cringed as one of their heroes was simply demoralized by his opponent. After a long lay off to rehab the arm, Nog is back and ready to avenge his arm cracking loss. When you dream up possible opponents for Big Nog, Dave Herman doesn’t exactly come to mind. His dedication to the sport is sometimes in question and his performances don’t really warrant a chance to fight one of the greatest MMA practicioners of all time.  Herman has also been trolling fight fans recently by proclaiming that “BJJ doesn’t work” and other statements of similar ilk.  This matchup may not be a superfight, but it is a fight that gives Nogueira that ability to put on a show in his home country. The guy is a superstar down there and the arena will be deafening if Big Nog takes home a W tomorrow night. Big Nog by submission. (Is it too cocky to predict an armbar as well??? Would be quite fitting…)

Kings!

Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar

I had absolutely ZERO interest in this fight when it was announced. As much as I love watching Silva fight, I didn’t want to see him simply run through another Light Heavyweight for the heck of it. I saw no purpose in the fight. After a few brilliant promos put together by the UFC and Bonnar, my mind changed. I mean, the guy has never been knocked out, he only has two TKO’s on his record simply because refs deemed him too bloody to continue fighting. Bonnar will stand in front of anyone and trade blows with reckless abandon. You can beat his face to a bloody pulp and Stephan will still march forward. Bonnar is a pioneer of modern MMA and truly believes that he will be able to defeat the greatest fighter of all time tomorrow. Whether you give Bonnar a chance or not, you have to respect his adamantium chin and willingness to step in the cage with ‘The Spider’ in his native Brazil.

It is almost a foregone conclusion that Silva will win this fight. Vegas deemed Bonnar one of the greatest underdogs in the history of the sport. My main prediction here is that this will be Silva’s longest lasting fight at 205 pounds. That isn’t anything groundbreaking, but Bonnar has the chin to hang with Silva a little longer than his buddy Forrest did. I don’t see Stephan’s will breaking as Griffin’s did either. Unless Silva pulls out some ‘Matrix” moves we haven’t seen yet, I can see Stephan making it to the second round. But that’s where things get iffy. Silva is a predator, he looks for his opponent’s weakness in the first round and adapts and attacks it in the second. (See Henderson, Sonnen II) It could be the first and last time that Bonnar is knocked out cold in the Octagon. Silva by TKO. 2nd Round.

Winter is coming for Stephan Bonnar…

Well, it is officially the ALar Era here at Moai Martial Arts. Make sure all of your shots are up to date. Spay and nueter your pets! Enjoy the fights and let me know if you have any predictions of your own!

Lineage in the Martial Arts (Paternity Leave)

Lineage in the martial arts is a very important and often contested issue. Some believe the authenticity of your chosen art is only valid if you’re training under the Grand Master’s direct descendent. It seems that if your teacher is a Gracie or a Uechi or from another famous family then you, yourself, will be great by association.

The truth is, you get out of training what you put into it. This is kind of like how a kid who go to community college and work his but off probably receive more from his education than a lazy Harvard legacy. Sure, he’ll lack the connections, but he’ll gain so much more from the experience of earning something and improving his mind.

When it comes to martial arts, I am more of a community college graduate. I have had excellent teachers, but I don’t have any star power behind my name. Antonitis Karate-Do will never be a household brand.

I am a brand new father though, and I plan to share what I’ve learned with my son someday–if he’s interested. Martial arts have enriched my life, and I hope to show him how they can help him as well.

With that said, we’ll be practicing the basics for awhile (eating, sleeping, and wearing sumo diapers) so I won’t be writing too much on this blog. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit though! Look for great MMA coverage courtesy of my man, ALar each week. Plus, I have some guest posts lined up for you to enjoy.

Thanks for your understanding and support. I look forward to getting back to writing just as soon as I catch up on some sleep!

Weekend Fight Watch: October 5th

Your prayers are answered, ALar’s Weekend Fight Watch is back!!!

No matter what your favorite flavor of MMA may be, your cage fighting taste buds will surely be satisfied with the cornucopia of Mixed Martial Arts events taking place this weekend. If you are a fan of the ladies getting it on in the cage, fighting that is… then Invicta FC on Saturday night will be right up your alley. The third card put on by the all female promotion is set to feature the likes of Shayna Baszler, Cat Zingano, and Tara Larosa as well as many other talented fighters. For those of you that reminisce of soccer kicks and the pageantry of the PRIDE days, ONE FC 6 is in your wheelhouse.

Just give me some soccer kicks…

ONE FC 6: Rise of Kings takes place in Singapore on Saturday. The card features two inaugural title fights in the Bantamweight and Lightweight divisions, as well as a Main Event ‘Superfight’ headlined by submission ace Shinya Aoki.  While ONE FC feautures many of the best fighters in the Asian market, old notables are also slotted to fight on Saturday including Melvin Manhoef and Jens “Lil’ Evil” Pulver. Lil’ Evil will be part of the first round of the Bantamweight Grand Prix taking place on the card.  Last but not least, former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista makes his MMA debut this weekend against journeyman Vince Lucero. Usually a promoter will throw a can in front of a big name making his debut in the sport, but Lucero will be no pushover for Bautista a.ka. “Batista”. Lucero has traded blows with the likes of Roy Nelson, Tim Hague, Soa Palelei, Laver Johnson, and Tim Sylvia putting together a 22-22 record. If Bautista wins, let us hope it at least LOOKS legitimate…

Now that would be a solid weekend of fights for any hardcore fight fan, but I haven’t even touched on the weekend’s two biggest cards. Get your party pants on! On Friday night we have Bellator 75 and UFC on FX 5: Browne vs. Bigfoot. Hope your DVR’s are ready, on to the preview!

Bellator 75

Live on MTV 2 and Spike.com

Photoshop skills on point!

Friday’s Bellator event marks the first round of the Heavyweight tournament.   The promotion’s Heavyweight title has been left in limbo since undefeated Champion Cole Konrad abrubtly retired from the sport to enter the financial realm of milk trading. (Really, he did that…)  Whether the winner of this tournament is going to be given the Heavyweight belt is still to be decided, but as we learned with UFC 146, a card full of big guys assures a night full of finishes.

Former UFC fighter Vinicius Queiroz looks to rebound from a tough few years since his first stint in the big leagues. The Chute Box product lost his UFC debut to Rob Broughton and then was popped for abusing Stanozolol. Read more about his odyssey here. I think Queiroz will be able to return to form against Mark Holata.

In the second bout of the night, Richard ‘Rare Breed’ Hale takes on UFC and TUF 10 vet Mike ‘The Juggernaut’ Wessel. Wessel has quite the story behind him, from his wife faking having cancer to being arrested for terroristic threats, the guy has some serious baggage. I expect ‘Rare Breed’ to handle ‘The Juggernaut’ in a slobberknocker leading to decision.

Remember the good times!

Speaking of ‘odysseys’, Brett Rogers will be making his second appearance for Bellator on Saturday. The homie Ben Fowlkes covered Rogers’ story better than I ever could, so I highly advise you check it our and read why I think ‘The Grim’ will be knocking out his Russian opponent Alexander Volkov.

The Main Event of the night will be a rematch of BFC Heavyweight vets Eric Prindle and Thiago Santos. Their first meeting was deemed a No Contest after Santos landed a nut shot on Prindle and Prindle couldn’t continue the fight. Trying to get these two back in the cage has been like pulling teeth for the BFC brass. The rematch was delayed once for Prindle having the flu; then at weigh ins for the proposed make up, Santos came in 12 pounds heavy and the bout was canceled again. Prindle will be looking to avenge the No Contest on his resume and win this one in a decision.

UFC On FX 5: Browne v. Bigfoot

Live on FX

Another weekend, another free UFC card.  None of the names from top to bottom may be screaming “Must Watch!” to the busy MMA fan, but we have to remember, that Joe Silva guy may know what he is doing and the card should certainly deliver, big names or not.

The Fuel TV undercard is full of the prelim stalwarts we have come to know and love over the last few years. Michael Johnson v. Danny Castillo promises to be a heck of a fight, both guys are athletic and love putting on a show. Johnson is the Vegas underdog but I anticipate him to get the W here. I also expect Dennis Hallman and Jeremy Stephens to take care of their respective opponents, and I hope that Shane Roller decimates Jacob Volkman, because everytime Mr. Volkman opens his mouth, somehow something more idiotic dribbles out.

The FX broadcast starts off with Josh Neer v. Justin Edwards. Not sure how these two finagled their way on to the Main Card as both are coming off losses, but I believe Neer takes a decision in a war here.

The winner of the next fight between John Dodson and Jussier Da Silva will get a shot at newly crowned Flyweight Champ ‘Might Mouse’ Johnson.  This will be Da Silva’s promotional debut, but the guy has been submitting guys like it is going out of style for the last year or so. Some Brazilians have a rough go of it their first time fighting in the States, but Jussier has experience in California’s local circuit. As much as I enjoy watching Dodson fight, I believe Jussier takes this one in a decision.

Blue Steel!

Finally! The rematch you have all been waiting for! Hieron’s fishy decision victory over Ellenberger at IFL: 2006 Championship has just been eating me up inside for the last six years…  The match was originally scheduled for UFC 151, but we all know what happened there. On Friday night, Ellenberger will get his chance for sweet, sweet revenge.  Hieron is one of the good guys in the sport with a great comeback story behind him, but Ellenberger is an absolute monster at 170. I predict the headlines on the UG after this one will read something along the lines of “Ellenberger MAULED Hieron!!!!11!!!”

It seems as though these Heavyweight Main Events are becoming a trend for these smaller UFC cards. I can’t blame the organization as the Heavyweights rarely fail to entertain. It is safe to say though that the two guys in the Main Event are in very different places in their careers.

Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, I have no idea where I’m bleeding from…

The last time we saw Travis Browne was at UFC 145 where he looked like a world beater as he demolished Chad Griggs and submitted him in the first round. The last time we saw Bigfoot Silva, he was nearly drowning in a pool of his own blood after Cain Velasquez opened up a cut akin to ‘Ol’ Faithful’ on the forehead of the Brazilian.  Right now, I see Travis Browne as a poor man’s Cain Velasquez. Both are very athletic for their size and have great striking technique, but Browne may not be as well versed on the ground as Cain. With that comparision being said, I think Browne will still beat Bigfoot just as Cain did, but it may take him a little longer to do so. I’m going with Browne by TKO in the late second round.

Who needs to go see TAKEN 2 this weekend when there is this much great MMA going on across the globe??!!? Any thoughts on this weekend’s fights are much appreciated in the comment section!

Weekend Fight Watch: September 28th

If you aren’t spending your weekend at the largest agricultural fair in Connecticut, then kick back the Laz-Z-Boy and grab yourself some pork rinds because there is a whole heck of a lot of great MMA to watch this weekend. Fans were almost treated to three great cards, but Saturday’s Strikeforce card, featuring a Lightweight title bout between Gilbert Melendez and Pat Healy was scrapped when it was revealed Melendez had to pull out due to a sparring injury. Once learning of Gilbert’s inability to compete on the card, Showtime decided against putting on the event without Melendez’s drawing ability. Many fans are now speculating about the future of Zuffa’s pet promotion.

Friday Night: Bellator 74

Broadcast on MTV2 and Spike.com

Friday night’s Bellator card will feature the opening round of the Season 7 Welterweight Tournament. The Quarter Finals feature eight fighters looking for a shot at Ben “Nyquil” Askren’s title. The Bellator Welterweight division may not have many household names throughout its ranks, but a few of the guys fighting on Saturday have rock solid resumes. After winning his trilogy bout with Waachiim Spiritwolf, the always exciting Marius Zaromskis will be taking on Tristar gym product Nordine Taleb. A guy from Tristar taking on a guy who has been in the ring with Sakuraba and Nick Diaz? Sign me up! Also, look out for undefeated Russian prospect Andrey Koreshkov taking on Jordan Smith. Koreshkov has not lost in 10 professional fights and has finished every opponent foolish enough to step in front of him.  Jim Wallhead will be taking on the inaugeral Bellator Welterweight Champ Lyman Good in the final fight of the night. Wallhead holds noteworthy wins over Che Mills, Frank Trigg, and Joey Villasenor.

Saturday Night: UFC on Fuel TV: Struve v. Miocic

Live from Nottingham, England

We all know that with the recent rash of injuries in the sport, you can’t plan on seeing a fight as scheduled until the fighters actually touch gloves and a middle aged man screams some variation of ‘Let’s get it on!”.  Luckily, Saturday night’s card has remained relatively untouched by the injury bug and is chock full of solid matchups. The undercard is loaded with English fighters to appeal to the local market, while the Main Event of the night features two Heavyweights with other notable European connections.

The aforementioned Che Mills starts off the Fuel broadcast against fellow striker Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig. Both athletes will throw haymakers with reckless abandon and are surely going to put together an early front runner for Fight of the Night honors.

Paul Sass wins by triangle, it’s a law, like dinosaurs or water…

Brit Paul Sass will look to use his patented ‘Sassangle’ to tap Matt Wiman in a captivating lightweight booking. Wiman has never been submitted in twenty career fights, but I have a feeling Sass will be able to pull off his signature submission in front of his countrymen.

When this card was announced, there was little doubt that Dan Hardy would be on it. He will trade blows with Amir Sadollah on Saturday. Both guys have had rough runs as of late Octagon, but the home crowd will be fanatically supporting Hardy and I expect him to earn a decision victory.

The Main Event of the night is a seriously intriguing Heavyweight bout. Stefan ‘Skyscraper’ Struve takes on Stipe Miocic in a fight that is near impossibly to pick. The guys in Vegas have Miocic as the favorite, but when you check out their respective resumes, it is tough to discern who comes out ahead. Struve certainly has size to his advantage, his 6 foot 11 frame makes him a nightmare to attempt to emulate in a training camp. The massive Dutchman can also rely on his experience against Stipe, as Struve has 29 career fights (losing just five), compared to Miocic’s 9.

Stee-Pay is the name!

Though, the Croatian-American Miocic can boast that he is undefeated in those 9 bouts, even so, the guys that Struve has lost to (Notably Roy Nelson, Christian M’Pumbu, Travis Browne, and Junior Dos Santos) don’t exactly suck… After consulting my Magic 8 Ball to pick a winner, I am going to have to side with the oddsmakers on this one though. Miocic is a hell of an athlete. He has a substantial amateur resume to draw from, including a Golden Gloves Championship, NCAA Division 1 Wrestling, and a solid college baseball career that drew interest from MLB Scouts. Miocic will be able to utilize his athleticism and powerful striking to overcome Struve’s size advantage and earn a late round TKO.

Enjoy the weekend of fights and look forward to more Weekend Fight Watch’s in the future! Don’t forget to set your DVR for The Ultimate Fighter: Fridays on FX as well!

How to Achieve Mushin

Here’s a post about how to achieve “no mind” courtesy of one of our sister sites, Good Circuits.  Yeah, I wrote it, and I’m reblogging it, but I think the idea of practicing mushin is important in all pursuits–not just martial arts.  Take a look at it and let us know if you have any exercises you perform to help your training reach a more meditative state. – Bill

ALar’s UFC 152 Picks: Back on the Horse!

ALar’s UFC 152 Picks: Back on the Horse!

Draft #7 of the UFC 152 poster…

Here we are almost one-month removed from the cataclysmic circumstances surrounding UFC 151. With the organization forced to cancel an event for the first time in its history; fans, media, and even promoters were scrambling to identify someone to throw the blame upon. Most every party involved tossed the blame for the cancelation upon Jon Jones and his coach, Greg Jackson. Dana White publicly lambasted the Light Heavyweight Champ, even going as far as declaring his coach Jackson a “sport killer”. Now fast forward a month, and White and the UFC have to turn around and promote an event with Jones as the headliner. After 151 was canceled, anyone that could have even remotely deserved a shot at the title denied a possible match up with Jones citing the time constraint of a September date wouldn’t allow for a proper training camp. I guess that makes sense…  When things looked bleak for the organization to have their cash cow defend his belt within the window they had hoped, the clouds parted and the MMA world was enlightened to learn veteran and former champ Vitor Belfort would fight Jon Jones at UFC 152. The Toronto card already featured the inaugural flyweight title fight between Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson and adding the Jones fight just sweetened the pot for the Canadian crowd. I’ll discuss whether Vitor actually has a shot at beating Jones a little later, but it is nice to see a guy step up to the plate (and in weight…) to help the company and please the fans. On to the previews!

PRELIMINARY CARD (FX, 8 p.m. ET)

Vinny Maghalhaes v. Igor Pokrajac

How this fight isn’t on the main card is a little puzzling to me… Regardless, it marks the return of Vinny Maghalhaes to the UFC. After losing in the finals of TUF 8 and a subsequent bout to Eliot Marshall, Vinny found himself treading water in the free agent waters of the world of MMA. Using a combination of his elite Jiu Jitsu skills and ever evolving stand up, Maghalhaes found himself the Light Heavyweight Champion of the M-1 Challenge promotion.  After some shady proceedings by M-1 management, Vinny wished to leave the promotion, vacate his title, and head back to the UFC. A long contract dispute followed between Vinny and M-1, but on Saturday we will finally be able to see one of the world’s most gifted Jiu Jitsu players back in the Octagon.  Though rest assured, Pokrajac won’t be welcoming Vinny back to the UFC with open arms. The heavy handed Croatian will be looking to stand with Magalhaes and abuse the Brazilian on the feet. Vinny first parted ways with the UFC because his stand up skills were severely lacking. I reckon he may be looking to showcase his improved striking on Saturday. Though, unfortunately, I predict this will be his downfall. Igor is much more experienced on the feet and I don’t see Vinny attempting to grind this out on the ground in his first fight back. Pokrajac by decision.

MAIN CARD (Pay Per View, 10 p.m. ET)

Charles Oliveira vs. Cub Swanson

Both of these featherweights are looking to rise in the division standings with a strong performance on Saturday. Swanson likely holds an advantage on the feet, with Oliveira being more gifted on the mat. This fight has all of the makings of a barnburner and I see it ending as the athletes begin to tire in the final round. I think Oliveria will be able to exploit Swanson’s susceptibility to chokes and earn himself a submission victory. Oliveira by submission.

Matt Hamill v. Roger Hollett

YES! Finally! Roger Hollett’s UFC debut!

YES! My prayers have been answered! Matt Hamill has come out of retirement!

*Things said by no one…*

Hamill was a great fighter, and an even greater human being who deserves the respect of anyone privileged to know his story. Though coming off two losses, it doesn’t seem as though The Hammer’s return will send shockwaves through the MMA community.  Hamill will enter the Octagon against Canadian Roger Hollet. Never heard of him? Me either. The Canuck brawler is a former Extreme Cage Combat and Maximum Fighting Championship Light Heavyweight Champion, whatever that means… Hollett has a kickboxing pedigree and is no slouch on the ground. I would imagine these two Light Heavys will stand and trade with each throwing in a takedown or two attempting to steal rounds. Hamill may try his ever ‘popular’ lay-n-pray tactic to tip the scales in his favor as well. I believe this one goes to the judges. Something about Hamill making an unexpected return makes me feel the scorers will be on his side… Hamill by Decision.

The Hammer strikes again!!! Get it?

Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping v. Brian Stann

Okay, now we are getting to the fun stuff. I will root for Brian Stann in any endeavor he takes on. The guy is a hell of an American and an inspiring role model for all of us. (If you don’t believe me, go here, scroll down to Stann and get informed!).  The UFC is touting this as a UK v. US matchup but it also holds much more significance in positioning for the Middleweight division. Bisping is determined to talk (a.k.a. “Chael”) his way in to title shot against The Spider, while Stann is just looking to climb the 185 lb ladder any way he can. The Count is the more complete fighter in all aspects of the game, but Stann’s power is unprecedented and makes him a danger to give Bisping the ol’ Hendo treatment at any moment.  Picking against Brian Stann is basically like rooting against America, and we just don’t do that here at Moai Martial Arts. I am pretty sure anti-Stannism is a form of high treason in some states.   This pick is definitely fueled by own overwhelming American pride and patriotism, but I am picking Stann by 3rd Rnd TKO.

Inaugural UFC Flyweight Championship Fight

Joseph Benavidez v. Demetrious Johnson

Time for the little guys to shine. What can you expect from a flyweight fight you ask? Non-stop action until the final bell? More punches landed per round than any other division? Really tiny dudes attempting to beat the crap out of each other? An emphatic ‘Yes’ to all of the above! Fireworks will fly when the 125 pounders enter the cage to battle for the title on Saturday. Benavidez is coming in to the bout on a hot streak and likely has the better punching power of the two, but Demetrious Johnson is widely regarded as the fastest fighter enlisted the UFC’s ranks. Both have traits that make them an educated pick, but I think Joe B’s camp may be the deciding factor here. The Team Alpha Male product will be looking to bring the belt back to his fellow tiny bro’s and represent for the Sacramento little man crew.  His day-to-day training with the best of the best from the smaller weight classes will give him an edge in the ring on Saturday.  Even though he is lightning quick, I don’t think Johnson will be able to inflict enough damage on Joe B to earn a decision win. Benavidez by decision.

Woooo!

Light Heavyweight Championship

Champion Jon Jones v. Vitor Belfort

As much as I would love to see the ‘Old Lion’ Vitor Belfort knock Jones’ head off on Saturday, I just can’t dream up any scenario where that possibly happens. Sure, Vitor has absolute howitzers for fists (66% of his wins have come by KO or TKO) but Jon’s reach is so absurd that I don’t believe Vitor will be able to get in close enough to rock Jones in the noggin. Jones will have absolutely no desire to stand and trade with Vitor, thus I can imagine he will pick his spots and strike from outside. If the fight reaches the later rounds, Jones will surely attempt to take Vitor down and ground and pound his way to a victory.  I am praying to whoever Vitor prays to that his head doesn’t end up bouncing up and down off the mat tomorrow night, but that is a highly likely probability.  We always throw the phrase “A Puncher’s Chance” around when predicting fights, but it truly embodies Vitor’s likelihood of victory on Saturday. I hope with every fiber of my being that The Phenom dethrones the Champ, but in all reality I see Bones winning via TKO. Jones by TKO.

I couldn’t resist! I loathe the guy!

Agree with my picks? Disagree? Are you one of the four fans Jon Jones has left and want to start and internet war with me? Great! Any posts in the comment section are appreciated!

A Link to the Past

Remember the forest where you get the Master Sword in the SNES classic, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? If not, here’s the clip I’m thinking of.

Thanks for indulging my 90’s video game geekery. That’s probably one of my favorite childhood memories. Pathetic, I know.

That brings me to the point of this post. I spent a tad too much time indoors as a kid, but I still played outside a good amount. There are a lot of kids in my neighborhood where I live now, and they are NEVER outside. My wife and I don’t see them all summer until the school busses arrive to pick them up in the fall.

It’s pretty sad, really.

Now that I’m older and I have a job and responsibility and stuff, I try to spend as much time outside as possible. Youth is wasted on the young, right? If you’re nostalgic about riding your bike on The Fourth of July, jumping into leaf piles, and building snowmen as much as I am, then we can probably agree about what’s keeping us from keeping up with those pastimes into adulthood.

Time.

Or the lack of it, I should say.

So what’s a groaning grownup to do? We have so much to do and so little time to do it. How can we work, train, and play everyday and keep up with it all?

My answer is to be smart about it. Combine your favorite activities!

For example, I often grade papers outside. I wear a weighted vest and ankle weights when doing yard work. I do most of it by hand. And I train outside as much as possible. Running, biking, hiking, katas, makiwara conditioning, dumbbell swings, rope climbs–pretty much anything you sweat over in the gym or dojo can be done outside!

There’s a little wooded grove I’ve found recently. When I run through, the squirrels and birds and bunnies are there. I haven’t found the Master Sword yet, but it’s a great spot to do burpees and to meditate. It’s a great opportunity for natural training and to reconnect with the outdoors–even if only for a little while.

Do you have any clever ways of training outside? Let us know. Of course, you can always play Zelda on the Nintendo DS outside, but that wouldn’t be as much fun.

PS – Look for a tutorial on how to spice up your burpees coming soon!
