You’d think a champion in mixed martial arts would have some difficulty reflecting on his success and that he’d be reluctant to share his secrets. The demanding training schedule, the blows to the head, and his training camp’s requirements for secrecy would normally prohibit him from being frank and honest about what makes him great. MMA Combine: The Future of the Sport?
I’m going to scoop this story over ALar. It’s been a while since I’ve written about MMA, so here goes nothing! – Bill
__________
There’s been a lot of press about the first ever UFC Combine to be held at the Mandalay before UFC 162. Apparently Uriah Faber and Phil Davis will be hosting the event meant to assess and showcase top MMA amateur prospects registered with their site, MMADraft.com Continue reading
Back to Brazil: Taking a look at Belfort versus Rockhold
ALar’s take on UFC on FX 8: Belfort v. Rockhold
The good news? The UFC is back in our lives after a three week hiatus. The bad news? The UFC on FX card going down this Saturday in Brazil isn’t exactly star studded… With stellar cards like UFC 160 and 161 looming in the near future, this card doesn’t really get my blood pumping. Though with the lackluster undercard, the top two fights on FX should be of interest to even the most modest MMA fan. BJJ dynamo Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza will be making his long awaited UFC debut against Middleweight midcarder Chris Camozzi. Jacare was slated to face off against heavy handed Costa Phillippou, but much to my dismay, the boxer from Cyprus had to pull out due to injury. After Philippou’s removal from the card, Camozzi valiantly stepped in to attempt to tame the gator. The Main Event of the night and the tilt catching most of the media attention pits former Strikeforce Middleweight Champ Luke Rockhold against the TRT fueled Brazilian ‘Young Dinosaur’ Vitor Belfort. Most of my preview will take a look at that fight and the surrounding issues, but I’ll throw out my picks for the rest of the card as well. Here we go!
How a Jedi Stays Safe on the Subway
I recently saw a few clips on the news and the Internet that really grind my gears.
This guy is oblivious . . .
and this guy is just plain silly!
I don’t mean to mock the victims of these robberies. I do want to make a simple observation/recommendation that we all try to BE AWARE OF OUR SURROUNDINGS! Continue reading
Nootropics for Martial Artists
Here’s a cross post from sister (father?) site JackedDad.com about nootropics. Also known as smart drugs, these naturally derived and synthetic substances to help to improve memory and focus for many people. Continue reading
How Moving Meditation Can Help You in the Martial Arts
We’ve had a beautiful stretch of weather in New England this week after a long, snowy winter. That’s why I couldn’t help but hold my karate classes at Gracie Farmington Valley outside! The kids loved getting to run around and play games for our warmups and after class; their parents definitely enjoyed relaxing in the fresh air, too!
ALar’s UFC 159 Preview
UFC 159: The Fight We All Haven’t Been Waiting For!
As a self-proclaimed MMA fanatic, I am somewhat ashamed to say that this event is taking place just down the street from me in Newark, New Jersey and I will not be in attendance. The Bossman and I had made preliminary plans to attend, but with the squash match booked as the Main Event and an undercard that lacks any ‘must see’ tilts, we decided we would be much more comfortable watching from our respective couches rather than the nosebleeds in Newark. The whole card, from Facebook to Pay Per View is filled with interesting matchups and meaningful fights, but there isn’t a scrap on the card that I would empty my wallet to watch in person.
I’ll delve into my thoughts on the evening’s Main Event between Light Heavyweight Champ Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen a bit later, so prepare yourselves… Every other fight on the Main Card actually means something in relation to its division and each fighter will be looking to assert themselves as a legit contender come Saturday. With the likes of Jim Miller, Roy Nelson, and Michael Bisping on the card, there will be no lack of hype surrounding UFC 159. On to the Preview!
Karate Poem
Here’s a neat multimedia poem created by Jesse Enkamp of KarateByJesse. I think a lot of us can relate. Why not take a minute to check it out? It will remind you about the things we love most about training in the martial arts!
UFC vs. Strikeforce on FOX?
UFC vs. Strikeforce on FOX (But don’t call it that…)
Like many of you, I have spent a better part of the last week glued to the television watching one heartbreaking story after another develop. In times like these, sports can be a welcome escape from the tragic stories we see evolving in front of us. Tomorrow night on FOX there is a heck of a UFC card going down that promises to put a smile on the face of nearly every fight fan out there, even if it is for just a few hours.
Every fight on the Main Card pits a former Strikeforce stand out against a current UFC vet. The Main Event is, in actuality, the first true UFC “SuperFight” that we have seen in a very long time. Defending UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson will be defending his strap against long time Strikeforce Lightweight king Gilbert Melendez. Melendez has long been thought to be one of the top 155 pounders in the world, and tomorrow night he finally gets his chance to prove it. Heavyweight up and comer Daniel Cormier will also look to assert his position as one of the top big guys in the world when he makes his promotional debut against aging former UFC Heavyweight Champ Frank Mir.

UFC 160: Slugfest City
ALar takes a look at the UFC 160 card
If you are a fan of burly dudes tossing haymakers at each other’s faces while locked in a cage, then UFC 160 might just be for you! After last week’s lackluster card from Brazil, (seriously 50/50 guard?!?! Really?!?) the UFC looks to rebound with a series of slobber knockers going down at the MGM Grand in Vegas tomorrow night. The card is particularly loaded with notable bouts taking place from top to bottom. Notable fighters throwing down on the undercard are Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Colton “The BackPack” Smith, and veteran Mike Pyle.
The Main Card features a Lightweight #1 contender fight (that I am not necessarily sold on…) between Gray Maynard and TJ Grant. Also, 205 pound rising star Glover Teixeira takes on the heavy handed Kiwi James Te-Huna. The last two Heavyweight fights on the card are a round robin tournament of sorts. Former Champ Junior Dos Santos takes on Mark ‘The KFC King’ Hunt in what HAS to be a Heavyweight #1 contender scrap and is my early pick for Fight of the Freakin’ Night. The night is capped off by the rematch that no one wanted to see. ‘Bigfoot’ Silva will be challenging Cain Velasquez for his Heavyweight gold. Just one year ago, Silva was drowning in a pool of his own blood after Cain unleashed an unholy salvo of elbows on the helpless Brazilian’s dome. Who knows if this fight will go down in the same fashion (Hint, Hint: I think it will…) but with a card as promising as this one, this could be the first must order UFC PPV in some time. On to the preview!
