MG In Action

If you haven’t seen this site yet, you definitely need to check it out!  MGInAction gives you access to Marcelo Garcia’s lessons, strategies, and sparring sessions held at his school in New York City.

If you like watching videos on YouTube, then you can guess how the format works.  This site is better though because the clips are much more informative and in depth.  If you like watching instruction DVDs, you will also find this site superior because of it’s easy-to-navigate archives.  I always hate wading through extra footage before finding what I want to see–not here!

Best of all, you can organize queues and playlists based on topic.   Having trouble with guard passing?  Check out some of Marcelo’s best lessons and save them for later.  Want to watch some guillotine setups?  You can line up clips of Marcelo cinching them while rolling.

The “in action” section of the site is probably the best feature.  As you study the techniques you’re most interested in, you can watch the lessons and then immediately see instances in which Marcelo sets up and executes each move while rolling.  Personally, I often have difficulty translating what I see on video to live sparring.  The “in action” clips are really helpful for me because I can see all the different scenarios in which to use the move.

I’m a new member to the site, and I look forward to seeing how it advances my game over the next few months!  I already feel like I’m starting to “see” more than I did before: I’m feeling a little more aware of how theory and technique flow together.

If you want a one-week trial to the site, click here (or on the banner to the right) and check it out!  Some of my training partners have been telling me about it, and I regret not signing up sooner.  The price is $25 per month, but there’s no risk to the trial period.  Take a look and let us know what you think!

Black Friday Deals

They're either very brave or . . .

Not to add to the orgy of comercial chaos that is Black Friday, but here are a few sites featuring specials you may find too good to pass up!

I don’t think my martial arts skills are good enough to compete with the mobs of angry shoppers today, so I got up early to browse online.  Like Bruce Lee said, “Be like water.”  Taking the path of least resistance to win the battle of holiday retail seems like a good strategy to me!

If you have any good, possibly life-saving, deals to share, please leave them in the comments.  If the next few weeks resemble a mad battleground, we’ll need as much subterfuge as we can muster!

My Secret Weapon

Who would have known a rolled up bathmat could be so handy?  I was using this to block a draft from the back door of my garage where I train, but Home Depot had a nifty heavy-duty draft stop that I bought on impulse.  It works like a charm!

Wanna get high?

I was doing some strength training this afternoon, and decided to put the old mat to good use.  A few strips of duct tape keeps it together, and I used it for calf raises and to increase the difficulty of straight-legged dead lifts.  I have to say it did the trick!

I can think of a few other uses as well.  I might try it as padding to help me finally master single-knuckle push-ups.  It could help with neck bridges as well.  Can you think of any other uses?  Do you have any simple, fun training toys?

UFC 123

Needless to say I’m looking forward to this one because of Machida vs. Rampage.  It will be interesting to see how style match up this time.  Rampage doesn’t utilize the same technique as Shogun, but he is equally aggressive when he needs to be.  It should be a great fight!

Rampage says he wants to go back to his “old pride days.”  If those old slams are included, he could wreck some havoc.

Machida’s approach to this fight?

I guess I’m slighted that he sought out Steven Seagal for advice and not me.  I am an unabashed fan though, so I hope he rereads my old blog post from after he lost the title!

I’m psyched to see the Penn vs. Hughes rubber match as well.  This will be another clash of styles, and in interviews both men seem to be respectful of each other and ready for a great fight.

Even the undercard seems stacked for this one.  I’m particularly looking forward to Sotiropoulos vs. Lauzon and the return of Karo Parisyan.  What fights are you most interested in?  Who do you think will win?

AWOL Videos

I’m sorry I haven’t been a very good blogger lately–a little slow on the updates, I know.  Here are a few videos and an awesome YouTube channel to check out if you haven’t already!

First up, a neat video of Shohei-ryu’s Ryuko kata.  It’s new to me, and I’ve used this video to help learn it.  I’m not sure who the woman is performing it, but she’s really good!

Here’s an older version performed by Master Takara.  It’s a little longer than others I’ve watched, but you can see how the focus and cadence carries over to the new version.

Also, check out  Submission 101’s YouTube channel for great grappling tips and techniques.  They’re also featuring a short film on MMA that looks pretty neat.

The Hidden Dangers of Sandbagging

I experimented with some plyometric exercises with my sandbag today.  To learn how to make your own, and for some great workouts, check the Rosstraining.com archives.  Here’s a picture of the one I made a few years ago.  It’s a little worse for wear, but it does what it’s supposed to (i.e. provide lots of dead weight that I try to lift).

Fun and effective workout tool? Or instrument of death?

You can leave the straps on, or you can cut them off.  I like to use them for rows and to carry the bag to and from exercise stations, but they’re not necessary.  Despite my predilection for handles, you’ll see their drawbacks in a second . . .

Anyway, today I put together a simple circuit. I had some good luck with it, and it was designed to train explosive strength.  While not true plyos, the lifts and throws tired my muscles–if not my cardiovascular system to a great degree.

1. Cradle the bag on your knees.  Squat with overhead press. (See CrossFit Thrusters).  Remember to throw the bag forward.  (I threw the first one backward.  BIG mistake!  One of the aformentioned straps wrapped around my face and the 100lbs. bag pulled me to the floor.  I lay there dazed for awhile, wondering what the hell happened.  You’d think that would encourage me to cut the straps, but no.  I carried on to the next exercise in the circuit.)

2. Rows using the straps. Let go at the end of each pull to “throw” the bag upwards.  (Again, you can cut the straps and just grab the bag.  This is probably best anyway, because it will help train your grip.)

3. Floor presses, launching the bag over your head. If you’re using a heavy bag, kneel in front of it, lift it a little, and slide a knee beneath.  Then lie back with it in your lap, and shimmy it onto your chest.  Just press and throw!  You might need to bounce your butt to build enough momentum to toss the bag without it landing on your face.  (I luckily managed to escape injury here.)

4. I went through the circuit four times without rest.  Retrieving the bag and preparing for each throw counts as active rest.

Aside from a near death experience, this workout was fast, fun, and effective.  It’s nice to be able to follow through each rep after completing the entire range of motion.  It helps you to practice exploding with complete power and velocity without having to clutch a weight or grip a bar.  The sequence of exercises also works the entire body–grip endurance a bonus.

Do you have any neat exercises or workouts that enhance explosive strength?  Share them here!

PS – This post isn’t really about sandbagging per se (or claiming a lower skill level to best your opponent) but it is a good warning to be alert during your workouts.  You never know when you might be attacked by your DIY equipment!

Staring at the Walls

One of the best things I learned while studying karate as a kid was to be observant.  I don’t mean in the sense that martial arts teaches you to be aware of your surroundings or that mystical, meditative calm that some claim to achieve while performing kata.  For me, the former is a passive skill I’ve developed, and the latter is an enlightened moment seldom experienced.

I’m referring to something much more practical.  My sensei seldom discussed the history of our style, Japanese names for things, or what was going on in the greater martial arts community.  Instead he told us to “read the walls.”

What this meant was for us to study the articles on his bulletin boards, the magazines in the sitting area, and the posters on the walls.  And there was a lot to read on the walls.  Over time, I absorbed tenets of the philosophy of Uechi-Ryu, its founding, the ranks.  I learned about the masters of karate.  I learned about the fighters they influenced like Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, and, of course, Chuck Norris.  I picked up some great one-liners I still repeat, like “everyday in every way I will get better and better.” (Émile Coué)

I’m a school teacher now, and with the onset of ADD and its over-diagnosis, I’m used to watching kids look everywhere but at the lesson I’m teaching.  Though much of the time they’re looking without seeing, I try to put stuff up in my classroom they may retain–like throwing pasta on the walls of their minds to see what might stick.  One of the ways sensei made sure we were doing our homework was to include questions about what we learned in our kyu tests.

Maybe next week I’ll test my students’ powers of observation.

What are some of the most important, but less obvious, lessons you learned at the start of your martial arts journey?

PS – Holler back if you think I rocked the puns.

EA Sports MMA

Too bad this fight will probably only happen virtually. Here’s a cool trailer for the game featuring Emelianenko vs. Couture.

Has anyone played the demo? Things have been crazy lately, and I haven’t had a chance to really write much, let alone play Xbox. Is the game worth going out to get? I played the first UFC Undisputed non-stop for about a week, then dropped it for the most part. I don’t know; despite all the options available, a lot of sports games lack a certain something in my book. I haven’t really played them since Tecmo Bowl and NHL ’95!

I miss these games!

Wouldn’t Bo Jackson and Pavel Bure would be a pretty neat match-up in a game?

Isn’t it awesome that both videos use “Back in Black” as background music?

MMAHQ.com

Someone recently referred me to this site.  It’s one of those “deal-a-day” stores that sells overstock items.  If you’ve ever shopped at Woot.com or sites like that, then you know what to expect.

I’ve been following the featured items on MMAHQ.com for a few days now–some cool T-shirts around $10, but so far there’s nothing much I’ve personally been interested in.

I’m glad I checked in today!  I’ve been needing a new rashguard, and they’re selling a Hayabusa Haburi for $42.  Compare to the normal price of $60, and you know you’ve found a deal! (To compare, click here.)

Shipping is a $5 flat rate.  For $48, I’ll soon be rolling in my new rashguard.  Check out the site for other great buys!

Marcus Aurelio Seminar Pics

The seminar was very fun and informative yesterday.  It was great to have a world class competitor and coach, Marcus Aurelio, there to provide lots of MMA and BJJ tips and techniques.

After going overtime in both no-gi and gi workouts, special promotions were held in which Jay Bell received his black belt from head instructor Marco DeLima.  Congratulations, Jay!

Marcus Aurelio (4th), Jay Bell (1st!), and Marco DeLima (2nd)

As after all good martial arts seminars, a long photo shoot ensued.  Here are some great shots of the Team DeLima/Team Plus One crowd.  Thanks to everyone for a great day!

Thanks also to Josh Hesser for hosting us at ABD in Colchester.
